Bro. Orpheus J. Heyward is considered one of the the most dynamic and scripturally sound gospel preachers among churches of Christ today, who is able to articulate with profound simplicity the word of God, and provide practical applications for everyday challenges.
He is currently one of the most sought after Gospel preachers nationally and internationally. He was baptized into Christ in November of 1996 by his Uncle, Cornelius Heyward, who is the Minister of the Far Rockaway Church of Christ. It is at this congregation where he received his initial training in the fundamentals of the Christian faith. In June of 1999, he received a $10,000 scholarship from the Newark Church of Christ, under the leadership of Dr. Eugene Lawton, which would fund his education at Southwestern Christian College. Bro. Heyward completed the two year biblical curriculum at this institution.
During this time, Bro. Heyward was taken in under the mentorship of Dr. W.F. Washington for three years at the Golden Heights Church of Christ. It was under the mentorship of Dr. W.F. Washington that he was instructed in the areas of argumentation and debate, biblical interpretation, and church administration. In July of 2000 at the conclusion of his summer internship, he was publicly ordained as a Minister of the Gospel of Christ at the Golden Heights Church of Christ.
In October 2003, Bro. Heyward was hired at the West End Church of Christ as the Assistant Minister. During this time, he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Biblical Studies, and is currently nearing the completion of his Masters degree in Biblical Studies. In February of 2007, he was ordained as the full-time Senior Minister of the West End Church of Christ. Within the first year of his ministry, the West End congregation doubled in size, in which the congregation now numbers well over a 1000 members in attendance, and still growing. Bro. Heyward’s dynamic administrative style has empowered the church staff to utilize their gifts to the maximum potential.
Orpheus J. Heyward is frequently requested to speak on national and regional lectureships, and conducts revivals all across the country. His ability to interpret the scriptures is considered profound, and he has been nicknamed “the walking Bible”.
