I grew up in the Northlake Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana. I was baptized around the age of 9. My grandfather, Fredric Lee McKinney Sr., was an elder in the church. He is the first leader I saw, and the main person that I try to emulate today. However, my growth and hunger for the word of God increased when I placed membership at the East Main Church of Christ in Frankfort, Kentucky while attending college. After moving to Atlanta in 2005, I placed membership at the West End Church of Christ where my wife had already been a faithful member.
I chose to become a deacon because I love to serve and help people. With volunteering at work and at West End, I believe God was preparing me to be a servant. Being involved with the Evangelism Committee and WE Rise Ministry have allowed me to build great relationships with the church and gave me the confidence that I am capable of serving the West End family. I also attribute the love, kindness, and support of the Scruggs family in my decision to serve as a deacon. The scripture that highlights my thoughts of serving as a deacon is in the book of Philippians. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 NASB The leadership at the West End congregation personifies this mentality, and I am humbled to be a part of this great group of men that lead day in and day out. The lessons from Brother Heyward as well as all of the great teachers at West End has given me a foundation to build my faith and continue to grow spiritually.
I have been married to my wife, Rhonda McKinney, for over 10 years. We have two amazing children, Tyjuan Renee’ McKinney and Fredric Leon McKinney IV. We love to attend marching band events and hang out with family.
